Chelsea: Combined XI with Wolves ahead of season’s last match
Right wing-back: Adama Traore, Wolves
The only question surrounding Traore on this list was where to put him. At the end of the day, the side would be strongest with the Spaniard at right wing-back. Although this means excluding Matt Doherty from the team, Traore would excel in a wing-back role when combined with some of the Chelsea players. He’s one of the quickest, most technically gifted players in the Premier League; for that reason, putting him opposite Marcos Alonso makes for a counter-attacking nightmare. Traore improves any side in England—if not the world—without hesitation.
Central midfielder: Mateo Kovacic, Chelsea
Kovacic has been Chelsea’s best player this season and it isn’t particularly close. He’s not a goalscorer and doesn’t rack up many assists, but his work rate is phenomenal. The Croatian is one of the most under-appreciated midfielders in the Premier League, which is why he is chosen in the middle of the park over Wolves midfield duo of Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves. One thing is certain about this combined XI; there would be no shortage of incredible midfielders in this side. Kovacic is the total package, especially in this formation. When paired with N’Golo Kante as a central midfield duo, Kovacic is able to get higher up the pitch and display his unrivaled dribbling skills.
Central midfielder: N’Golo Kante, Chelsea
Kante walks into any team in the world with ease, no questions asked. He’s fit for Sunday’s match, in case anyone needed any justification for his inclusion in the combined XI. Even on one leg, he makes it into this side.
Left wing-back: Marcos Alonso, Chelsea
Alonso may not be the left back answer Lampard is searching for at Chelsea. However, you’d be hard pressed to find someone definitively better at playing the left wing-back position than the Spaniard. His performances at points this season and under Antonio Conte highlight his talent getting forward and putting him in the same XI as Traore would create a seemingly impossible match-up for opposing sides to defend against.
