It was always meant to be this way for Chelsea, it’s destiny. The Blues’ fate rests in their own hands in the last game of the season.

The story of the 2019/20 Chelsea team is almost written and ready to be published. The Blues have had a rollercoaster of a season, experiencing the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. However, through this turbulent year, the Blues have exceeded expectations beyond many supporters’ wildest dreams.

Now, as the season comes to a close, Chelsea faces one final test. A home game against Wolves is the only thing standing between the Blues and their ultimate goal: Champions League qualification. Any positive results and they’re in the top four. But if Chelsea loses and Leicester City beats Manchester United, the west London side will be on the outside looking in.

In many ways, this match is symbolic of a final test. Although Chelsea has an FA Cup final and a UCL knockout round game remaining, the last match of the Premier League season is seemingly the most important. It’s the culmination of not only the entire season, but the Blues’ progression from an inexperienced side to a Cinderella-esque group. Going through a season with as many young stars as Chelsea has, there are lessons to be learnt along the way. After all, nobody expected the Blues to be here.

At the end of the day, destiny brings the team to this point. It is a test for Frank Lampard as a young manager and his players as a young team. If the Blues don’t secure top four, it will feel like the end of the world. Rest assured, it isn’t and that comes from the gaffer himself. However, it’ll be a massive blow that could impact the club’s immediate future.

Chelsea has punched above its weight this season, which is part of the reason why players like Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner were quick to buy in to what Lampard is creating. This final test will cement the legacy of the 2019/20 season. If Chelsea wins, a top four finish will be secured with an FA Cup trophy possible, as well. Unfortunately, the chances of winning the Champions League are a distant light in the Blues’ rearview. Regardless, a top four finish, an FA Cup final appearance and a trip to the UCL knockout stage is not something fans had in mind this season—especially with the hand the club was dealt.

In the end, the match against Wolves will be seen as a test to the resiliency of this young group. The accomplishments have been far greater than anyone expected, but that doesn’t mean the bar cannot be raised some more; this is Chelsea Football Club we’re talking about. The final game of the Premier League season will determine how this young team wants to be remembered when it’s all said and done.
