Chelsea score predictions: Testy last day affair vs. Wolves
Chelsea has a decisive match on the Premier League’s Championship Sunday as the Blues host Wolves. How do our writers think the match will go?
Chelsea hosts Wolves in the final game of the Premier League season. The scenario is simple; if the Blues earn a point or more, they secure a Champions League spot. If not, their fate rests in the hands of Manchester United.
There’s no doubt Frank Lampard will have his squad ready. However, whether or not the Blues will turn up for the match is anybody’s guess. The nerves are present as Chelsea takes on one of the trickiest sides in England’s top flight. Here is how our writers believe the Blues will stack up against Wolves:
Olaoluwa Nwobodo: 3-1 Chelsea
While Chelsea’s home form has not been shining this season, the club would only be denied Champions League football if it allows itself to be denied. Wolves wouldn’t be a pushover, but the Blues should be able to beat them comfortably. If not then our problems are more than Kai Havertz and Jose Gimenez can fix.
Chelsea was able to put three goals past the best defense in the league and already-crowned champions, but on the same night, the Blues conceded five goals when the opponents did not create many good chances. That unfortunately sums up this season. They can be very good going forward, but also be embarrassingly amateur defensively.
Michael DeVito: 2-1 Chelsea
This one’s for all the marbles; it’s now or never; it’s the Blues’ last chance; there’s no tomorrow; and all the other catchphrases and cliches one can think of. It’s all about Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud against Wolves. If they score, the Blues secure UCL qualification. They don’t, it’s likely back to the Europa League. However, I believe they’ll get the job done.
Varun Dani: 3-1 Chelsea
“Dread it. Run from it. Destiny still arrives.” -Thanos
The Liverpool game was our equivalent of Infinity War, thrilling yet tragic. We lost after almost tasting victory because we didn’t go for the head. Sunday is our Endgame and we have to win; whatever it takes. One can only hope we “engage all our defences”, if there really are any.
Abhishek Pancholi: 4-1 Chelsea
The Blues sign off on the Premier League campaign with a thumping win and a statement of intent for next season.
Scott Brant: 2-1 Chelsea
It won’t be pretty, might even go as far as to say ugly, but the Blues do what’s necessary to finish the season on a high note. The only two things guaranteed are Pulisic scoring and my nerves getting destroyed.
Nathaniel Kay: 1-2 Wolves
Arguably Chelsea’s biggest game of the campaign against one of the best-formed teams in the country. The Blues have generally adapted well to a 3-4-3 formation; however, Wolves have typified that style ever since they returned to the Premier League. Frank Lampard failed to get Derby County over the line in his previous playoff final, and this fixture has the feeling of a final itself as pressure is just too much for his side.
Kevin Peacock: 2-1 Chelsea
With Champions League football beckoning, and Anfield’s fireworks ringing in the team’s ears, Lampard gets his side motivated for yet another big game. This game must end in victory and when the chips are down, Chelsea FC—under the rule of Roman, generally speaking—does the deal. Of course, a draw is all that is needed. However, to save our hearts, the Blues get clear air between them and Wolves during a frantic first 30 minutes taking a two-goal lead. Typical Chelsea though, the Blues squander a goal to a set-piece, but hang on for a crucial 2-1 victory. Goals from Oli G and Willian.
Barrett Rouen: 3-2 Chelsea
This will be a very deeply uncomfortable game and Chelsea will stumble to the end of the season, but at least get fourth.
Tan Yi Hao: 3-1 Chelsea
It’s the business end of the season and the next week could see Chelsea finish in the top four and lift the FA Cup—or witness its season-long efforts go down the drain. Its a proper coming-of-age moment for Lampard’s young guns, as well as a final farewell for many of the old guard, and you would bet that the Blues will once again rise up to the occasion.
Gabe Henderson: 2-0 Chelsea
As I mentioned prior to the match against Manchester United, Chelsea is at its best when its back is against the wall. The Blues will come away with all three points and a relatively comfortable victory, given the circumstances.
Nate Hofmann: 2-2 Draw
My hand to god, I’ve never been more nervous for a Chelsea game. Wolves are not a team to be taken lightly, and they have something to play for just as much as their hosts do. The Blues have the slight mental advantage of having run out with a massive victory in the reverse fixture, which should give them a boost of energy to get out to an early lead. Wolves will get more desperate late-on, and their inevitable late equalizer will be disappointing, but ultimately good enough for Champions League football.
