Chelsea player ratings: Anthony Taylor steals the show in the final
By Ishan Shah
Mason Mount (Winger): 6
Another good shift put in by Mason Mount. It is hard to find too many faults in his game today even though it wasn’t his most prolific performance from an attacking sense. As always, his energy on and off the ball caused several problems for Arsenal specially in the opening stages of the game where he wanted the ball back in dangerous areas of the field.
Olivier Giroud (Striker): 5
Giroud got the all important assist for Pulisic’s opener, but most of us hold up play was below par. Credit to David Luiz for giving him a hard time, and to the Arsenal defence for picking up the second balls. Despite Arsenal’s focus on limiting Giroud’s ability to link up with his teammates, Giroud was involved in most of Chelsea’s dangerous attacks.
Christian Pulisic (Left winger): 9
Another dreadful setback to an otherwise wonderful first season in the Premier League for Pulisic. Whenever he has played, he has always looked to be the most dangerous player for Chelsea and that was the case once again. Unfortunately, Chelsea could not build on his well taken goal, and their only other clear cut chance of the game happened to be early on in the second half when Pulisic’s hamstring gave way and did not allow him to make it 2-1.
Pedro (Right winger/Substitute): 4
An extremely unfortunate end to Pedro’s Chelsea career as he suffered a dislocated shoulder injury after coming on early in the second half. He feared getting injured prior to signing the short term contract extension ahead of his move to AS Roma, and sadly that is exactly what happened in his final game for the club. The only criticism of Lampard would be that he should have replaced Pulisic with another direct winger in Callum Hudson-Odoi rather than Pedro.
Tammy Abraham (Striker/Substitute): N/A
Tammy Abraham was not given the time or service to make an impact on the game as Chelsea chased a one goal deficit with 10 men on the pitch compared to Arsenal’s 12. However, yesterday’s game aside, one would hope that with the signing of Timo Werner he is able to regain his form and confidence sooner rather than later.
Callum Hudson-Odoi (Right winger/Substitute): N/A
Like Barkley and Abraham, it is hard to judge Hudson-Odoi’s performance today. Pulisic and Pedro’s injuries mean that he will likely start against Bayern in the Champions League which will give him a chance to end his season on a high. With Willian likely to be out for that game too, Hudson-Odoi will be motivated to have a good game against the club he very nearly left Chelsea for.
