Chelsea’s 2019/20 season came to a close as the Blues crashed out of the Champions League in the round of 16. How did the players perform?
Chelsea’s season came to an end at the hands of Bayern Munich as the Blues were defeated 7-1 on aggregate in the Champions League. All things considered, Frank Lampard’s young team played quite well and they’re able to travel back to London with their heads held high. It’s obviously not a result anybody in blue would have wanted, but it’s a realistic representation of the gap in quality.
Unfortunately, a few VAR decisions went against the Blues and ultimately overshadowed how well the team played as a unit until the dying moments. The tie was already wrapped up and Bayern was always going to advance, but Lampard can be proud of how his youthful squad performed. Here’s how the Chelsea players did in the Blues’ last match of the season:
Willy Caballero (Goalkeeper): 5.5
The Blues conceded four goals on the night, only the first one could be seen as one Caballero could’ve handled differently. With a defense as poor as the group in front of the Argentine, an offensive onslaught was expected.
Reece James (Right back): 7.5
The toughest task of James’ season and the young defender did quite well. He found himself under a lot of pressure from Alphonso Davies and Ivan Perisic, but handled it with maturity. James played with a sense of urgency seldom seen all season and made some positive strides in a big fixture. A great way for the 20-year-old to end a shaky season.
Andreas Christensen (Centerback): 6
Christensen didn’t make any catastrophic errors, but he didn’t do anything to stop the bleeding. He wasn’t good, wasn’t bad either. A decent day for Christensen, perhaps a trial for interested German sides?
Kurt Zouma (Centerback): 7
Zouma did all he could to prevent a slaughter; unfortunately, some things are beyond the talented centerback’s control. The Frenchman showed us he’s the Blues’ most talented central defender, but it was a day to forget for everyone.
Emerson (Left back): 4
The Brazilian-born Italian international had a final appearance he’ll surely want to forget. Emerson’s time in west London is all but up and its probably for the best. He’s a talented player, but his flaws are exposed playing for a club as large as Chelsea, especially in matches this big. The only reason he even got a run out is because of Marcos Alonso’s suspension and he showed on multiple occasions why this is the case.
