Three big questions: Chelsea and the awkwardness of Jorginho
By Travis Tyler
3. Will he remain vice captain with neither party completely satisfied with the other?
Given all the issues already brought up, Lampard did name Jorginho as his vice captain. Some see him as a leader and he surely is not the worst choice that could have been made. Others see it as a bit of appeasement to a player that Lampard already knew he would struggle with.
Chelsea has been shopping Jorginho out and Lampard is moving further away from tactics that have a spot for someone like Jorginho. The player and his agent seem to be spending their time trumping up suitors, though that seemed more possible with Sarri at Juventus.
Both parties are not satisfied with one another and it is probably only a matter of this summer or next when they split. With all that being present, should Jorginho remain vice captain?
Largely, the role is ceremonial. Cesar Azpilicueta is the captain, but Lampard has leaned on more senior players all season regardless of their status. He has spoken about the impact Olivier Giroud, Willian, Pedro, and even Jorginho have had on the squad.
Even still, vice captain is no inconsequential thing either. There was much debate over who should take the role before Lampard announced it would be Jorginho. If the player is sounding off for a move and the club is trying to make it happen, then is there a good reason to keep Jorginho as vice captain?
Much of it will depend on who can fill the role. Lampard has a myriad of options but if he is looking for a starter it may depend on the incomings and outgoings. Several of the players signed and linked to Chelsea have been captains for their clubs so they could all be options. Other players in the squad, such as those already mentioned, could also have a chance.
Furthermore, with Cesar Azpilicueta injured at least for the start of the season, the vice captain will become the de facto captain. If Jorginho will struggle to start next season, than a starter should be the vice captain filling in. The only question is who.
