With an incredible window so far, how could Chelsea improve their squad in the future to close the gap at the top of the Premier League table?

This transfer window for Chelsea has been outstanding. Landing the signature of Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, and the looming signature of Kai Havertz outline a great window for the West London outfit. However, there’s still a large number of holes in the squad that need addressing. No squad cannot be improved, so how can Chelsea bolster their ranks in the future?

Many will have clicked on this article to see Kepa Arrizabalaga get thrown under the bus for the fifteenth time this week. However, there’s enough of condemnation around Arrizabalaga without any more piling onto the lackluster Spaniard. He will be glossed over for now while saying that yes, in the long term there likely needs an improvement. But he’ll do for now.

So, where to begin? Well, a team is built from the goal outward. So, skipping over the 18-yard box, the back four seems like an ideal starting place. In this window, Chelsea has brought in a lot of aid to that defensive weakness. Thiago Silva, Chilwell, Sarr, and Xavier Mbuyamba have all been added to help the back end out, so where can Chelsea improve here?

Ideally, Chelsea could use a better starting centerback. Thiago Silva has been a great addition to a team that has had defensive woes since John Terry left. A second centerback to accompany him in the defense is going to be a vital piece needed going forward. Rumors of Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez were circling earlier this window, and he’d be a fine fit.

Where else could Chelsea improve? Moving forward, it should probably be down the wings. Christian Pulisic had a coming-out party after the restart, but a hamstring injury (along with a load of nagging injuries suffered all season) raise the question of who comes in after the American with Croatian heritage? Callum Hudson-Odoi had a good season, Mason Mount can play out wide, Havertz is maybe pushing it, and Ziyech can play at right wing. Another winger to play either side as an extra option off the bench should be on the wish list.

In the middle of the park, Chelsea look pretty set. Havertz, Mateo Kovacic, Ross Barkley, N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount, and Billy Gilmour provide a nice mix of defensive stability, attacking prowess, and youth to make this midfield sustainable over the course of a season. With such a condensed schedule too, this midfield could very well be important for a team aiming to push for the Premier League title.

Upfront, Chelsea look set. Werner scored on his debut against Brighton at the American Express Stadium. Tammy Abraham was the clubs top scorer in the Premier League. Olivier Giroud became a vital cog during the run-in after the lock down break and looks to be a key part for the future. There’s certainly some good options here to role out upfront for the Blues and again, it’s not a position that needs strengthening.
