Crystal Palace

What are they playing for?: Avoiding a relegation battle

What they’ll get?: A relegation battle

Why should Chelsea care?: The what if factor of Michy Batshuayi will be the main appeal here. He has never really gotten a chance at the Blues for a myriad of fair factors, but when he plays he scores. When he is on loan anywhere but a club that the mascot is, ironically, a bat, he scores. He surely won’t be coming back to the Blues next season, but a high scoring season will give many pause and wonder what could have been.

Everton

What are they playing for?: Gate crashing Europe

What they’ll get?: A solid if unspectacular midtable finish

Why should Chelsea care?: Fikayo Tomori is linked for a loan to the Toffes, but that seems to be truly up in the air. Beyond that, former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti is in charge and he has brought in quite a few solid players to push Everton back up to where they used to be. There is still a bit of a Frankenstein quality to the squad, but James Rodriguez, Allan, and Abdoulaye Doucoure really tie the room together.

Fulham

What are they playing for?: Premier League year two

What they’ll get?: Barely surviving relegation if that

Why should Chelsea care?: The Blues’ closest geographical rival isn’t much of a rival anymore. Gone are the days of Clint Dempsey and Fulham ruing the Blues’ day. They came up only to get shot back down last time and they barely came back up as it is. That being said, there is something to be said about having been there before and Fulham’s experience with the Premier League last time should be just enough to see them through.

Leeds United

What are they playing for?: Midtable

What they’ll get?: A straight up, season long relegation battle

Why should Chelsea care?: Leeds used to be one of the Blues biggest rivals, which feels like something every Premier League club can say. Marco Bielsa has brought the team back into the Premier League on his second time of asking. Bielsa is one of the game’s most highly regarded coaches, but his style (and spying) will be picked apart by the Premier League. They will find themselves as this season’s Norwich and they will be far more lucky to survive than many are predicting based on Bielsa’s <checks notes> Olympic Gold Medal.

Leicester

What are they playing for?: Europa League edging towards Champions League

What they’ll get?: A top half finish but not really close to Europe

Why should Chelsea care?: For their next big transfer? Leicester and the Blues have a weird relationship where they have generally been the only club to get Foxes for “cheap”. Last season, they pushed hard for Champions League and fell to pieces after the Covid break. They lost Ben Chilwell, but even if they had kept him they were due for a regression. They’ll be entertaining, but not as amazing as last season.
