Kai Havertz (Right winger): 6.5

Not the most eventful debut for Chelsea’s newest signing. Havertz has only been in London for a week and is yet to settle into his new surroundings. Despite barely training with his new teammates, Havertz was handed his first start as a Blue. The young German seemed understandably a little off the pace, but still managed to complete 88 percent of his passes, making one key pass to set off his German teammate Werner on a run.

Although Havertz could not fully display his attacking talents, he certainly put in a good defensive performance. Most memorably, the 21-year-old wunderkind did very well to sprint back half the length of the pitch to make an important tackle after giving the ball away cheaply in the first place. He made a total of three tackles and showed great energy throughout the game. There is so much more to come from Havertz, and Chelsea fans will be waiting eagerly to see him play against Liverpool.

Timo Werner (Striker): 8

Werner would have learned many things about the Premier League after a debut that saw him play against the biggest centre backs he has ever seen and left him with dead leg. Werner’s injury is not considered to be an issue, and Lampard expects him to return to training in a couple of days. Werner’s constant movement and high work rate made for enjoyable viewing.

The German was constantly either running behind the Brighton defence or dropping deep to receive the ball. He looked extremely sharp and was the first to react to an overhit Jorginho pass that saw him involved in his first ever goal in the Premier League. Werner had few clear opportunities to score his first Chelsea goal, but came close by having three shots blocked from dangerous areas. He was caught offside twice and with his electric pace, it seems like this will be a regular occurrence this season.

Mason Mount (Left winger): 8

Mason Mount put in yet another good shift. It is hard to find too many faults in his game as he does not seem fazed by the new signing of Havertz. As always, his energy on and off the ball caused several problems for Brighton throughout the game. He made four tackles and two key passes. In the end, Mount performed very well in the role of inverted left winger.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (Right winger): N/A

With Ziyech and Pulisic missing the game through injury, one would expect Callum Hudson-Odoi to start. After suffering a painful achilles injury that severely halted his development, Hudson-Odoi will be looking to get back to his best this season, especially with the number of new arrivals that can play in his position. Sadly for him, he was only able to come off from the bench against Brighton, but will certainly get more minutes this season due to the crammed schedule.

Next. Chelsea can wait on Declan Rice but not on a defensive midfielder. dark
