Mason Mount (Right winger): 5

Mount was, in the game, his usual high octane self as he pressed Liverpool to great effect in the first half of the match. When Christensen got his marching orders towards the end of the half, Mount’s pressing game became even more crucial in keeping Liverpool‘s marauding fullbacks and wingers at bay.

With much criticism having been directed at Lampard’s omission of Callum Hudson-Odoi from the starting XI, Mount once again showcased just how important he is to the manager’s style of play. Nonetheless, the Englishman’s end product does leave much to be desired and it is something that he would undoubtedly be looking to improve upon as he continues his development under the tutelage of Lampard.

Kai Havertz (Striker): 5

As the marquee signing of Chelsea’s busy transfer window this summer, it is understandable that Chelsea fans are expecting so much more from the versatile German forward following another rather average outing from Havertz. Sacrificed at halftime following Christensen’s sending off to accommodate a replacement centrehalf in Fikayo Tomori, the 21-year-old nonetheless showed signs of his class playing as a make-shift centre forward. Be it through his numerous one-touch passes or his intelligent runs into the box, Havertz has shown enough promise in his first two outings to hint at the player he could potentially become. All that’s left is for fans to show a little patience—both in him, and in the project helmed by Lampard as a whole.

Timo Werner (Left winger): 7

The brightest of Chelsea’s makeshift front three, Werner’s energy and pace were perhaps the only reasons fans continued to hold out hope for a comeback despite being one-man and 2-0 down in the second half. Direct, skillful and confident on the ball, it was the German’s speed that won Chelsea the penalty which Jorginho failed to convert late in the second half. The ability to affect a game—even without getting on the scoresheet—is something all top strikers possess and if he continues playing the way he does, it will only be a matter of time before Werner finds himself amongst the best to have ever played up top in SW6.
