Chelsea managed to get over themselves enough to finish the West Brom match level. What lessons can be learned from the day?

Chelsea managed a draw after some disappointed performances. In a game where Chelsea should have secured a win, the Blues failed to make a statement. Chelsea controlled possession and passing, but allowed the opposition to score three goals before half time. Although this was not the result anyone expected, there are still some positives to take away from the game:

1. Chelsea can fight back if they have to

Chelsea can fight back. After going down three goals before half time, Chelsea pushed to score goals. This goes for everyone on the field to the touchline. Lampard made changes and allowed the forwards to do their job specifically. Therefore, credit is given where is due.

However, that is as good as it gets for Chelsea. Conceding three goals is unacceptable, even more so the way the team did. The defense failed to contain an opposing team that posed, virtually, no threat. Moreover, with the quality at hand, there was no need to struggle for a draw. This was a game where Chelsea should have won by a land slide.

It is now clear that new signings do not mean immediate success. Chelsea have a great squad, but time is needed to establish a winning team. Nevertheless, performances such as today’s should not happen again. Although tactics and formations played a part, some players cannot fail to this degree. Performances need to improve all around, and new game plans have to be implemented in order to get the best of the players.

2. Cesar Azpilicueta is the rightful captain

Giving the captaincy to Thiago Silva was a mistake. In defense, the most experienced players were Marcos Alonso and Thiago Silva but they were Chelsea’s demise. Frank Lampard had a game plan in mind that included the defense doing their job. Unfortunately for him, and everyone else, Alonso and Silva decided to make a mess of everything. Alonso was lazy, unable to control anyone going down his flank, and clumsy inside the box. Silva, on the other hand, pulled a Steven Gerrard and let the opposition slip right into the goal.

The real lesson is that Azpilicueta is massively needed. Even if that means that he needs to play as a left back, his leadership and solid performance standards are a must on the field. Once Silva and Alonso were subbed off, and Azpilicueta came on, the game changed. The team did not look like conceding, which allowed the midfield and forwards to focus on scoring.

Lastly, Azpilicueta organized the back line, even when Lampard changed formations. His ability to understand the game, and his communication with his teammates are invaluable for Chelsea. After today’s game, regardless of which fullback is available, Azpilicueta has to start with the arm band on.

3. Callum Hudson-Odoi has what it takes

Since coming onto the field, Callum Hudson-Odoi made the difference. In all honesty, since the game against Barnsley, his spot in the squad was questionable. However, the moment Hudson-Odoi came on, he changed the game. His attacking mentality, connection with Timo Werner, and his ambition allowed him to score the second goal.

Hudson-Odoi was always looking for a goal, or an assist to contribute towards the draw. Every time the young Englishman received the ball, he had only one objective in mind. And, in contrast to his previous appearance, he kept his game simple, connected well with his teammates. In future games, Hudson-Odoi has proven that he has what it takes to change a game for Chelsea. His talent should not be overlooked, nor should it be underestimated. Even if other wingers are available, Hudson-Odoi should be given more chances on the field.
