CM, N’Golo Kante, 6.5

Kante helped with breaking the play a lot. He made four tackles and two interceptions. The midfield pivot of Kante and Kovacic did not play well in the first half. They gave the ball away too many times. They were sloppy in passing and many of their passes were either under-hit or over-hit. West Brom did not find it difficult to play through Chelsea’s midfield at all. There was no defensive cohesion.

CM, Mateo Kovacic, 5.5

Kovacic was not effective against Barnsley. He was guilty of many of the things Kante did especially with sloppy passes and a general lack of concentration. He failed to get any form of control against the midfield. Chelsea only started dominating proceedings when West Brom felt they had scored enough and would rather defend what they have.

CAM, Kai Havertz, 7

Havertz was involved in a number of good passing sequences between himself, Mason Mount, and Tammy Abraham, and subsequently, Callum Hudson-Odoi. His linkup with Hudson-Odoi to create the second goal was beautiful to watch, and that goal really revived the confidence of his teammates. Overall, Havertz had a good game, though in the first half he under-hit his passes too often. In the first 20-30 minutes of the game, Chelsea’s front four were ineffective as a whole.
