Chelsea predicted XI vs Sevilla: Preferred 4-2-3-1 again
Mateo Kovacic, Central midfield, 17, Croatia
Kovacic had a seven minute cameo for Chelsea against Crystal Palace before the international break. He didn’t make an appearance against the Saints, probably to keep him fresh for the opening champions league game. Chelsea needs Kovacic do what he does. It would be difficult to control the midfield against Sevilla, but that’s the task. He would roam and do his best to drive with the ball to link up with the more creative players, while Jorginho sits back and cleans up as much as he can, while distributing superbly to the flanks.
Jorginho, Central midfield, 5, Italy
Jorginho is Chelsea’s highest goal scorer in the league so far. That tells us what we need to know about Chelsea and chance creation. Half of Chelsea’s clear cut chances this season have been penalties. You still need to score penalties after winning them though, and Chelsea can trust Jorginho to do the job from the spot. Jorginho has been played well lately and as long as he doesn’t restrict his distribution to where he’s facing when he receives a pass, that form should continue. His reading of the game might be understated, ranking third in interceptions per game (1.8). His partnership with Kovacic in a pivot has been known to work, here’s to hoping it continues to do so.
Kai Havertz, Attacking midfield, 29, Germany
Havertz been playing a lot of minutes for Chelsea lately, but that’s what he was bought for. The former Leverkusen man would also have to play since Lampard has run Mason Mount into the ground. That’s not a bad thing though (Havertz playing). Havertz has found his feet in the Premier League and now has his first league goal. He would want to carry that form into Europe’s biggest stage. His last set of Champions League performances were poor, but now he has better players around him so he should look more comfortable in the company of Europe’s finest.
