Three key clashes to watch for as Chelsea hosts Sevilla in the UCL
2. Timo Werner vs. Diego Carlos
Perhaps the most intriguing matchup to watch in this game will be Chelsea’s speedy striker against Sevilla’s solid centerback. Both Timo Werner and Diego Carlos are widely regarded as one of the—if not the—best players in their respective teams. With battles happening all over the pitch in matchweek one of the Champions League, perhaps no individual bout will be more impactful than this one.
Werner has found his form recently, settling in nicely as Chelsea’s No. 9. The 24-year-old played all across the front line throughout the first few weeks due to some injuries and fitness concerns surrounding his attacking partners. Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech—the most notable early exclusions—being absent from the squad saw Werner forced out wide as the Blues brought in someone like Tammy Abraham to lead the line. However, since starting in the center, Werner has been in scorching form. He’s scored three goals for the Blues, all of which were absolute beauties.
On the other side of things, Carlos was brought in by Sevilla to sure up its defense last summer. The Brazilian made the £12.7 million switch to the Spanish side from Nantes and he’s been one of the signings of the last few windows. During his one year at the club, he played an integral part in the club’s Europa League championship campaign and his value has almost quadrupled. Carlos is now Sevilla’s most valuable player monetarily and perhaps in reality, as well.
In terms of the 1 v. 1 scrap, Werner lives to run in behind, which can frustrate a player like Carlos. Carlos is a no-nonsense defender and while that means he commits a ton of fouls in general, he’s not well disciplined in and around the box. He memorably gave away penalties in three consecutive Europa League matches last season, something that will make Werner’s mouth water. On the flip side, Carlos’ incredible passing ability and speed will frustrate Werner as he finds it difficult to press his defensive counterpart. The winner of this individual battle will likely earn his team a victory; it’s what Champions League nights are made for.
