Chelsea player ratings: A fine draw masks tired legs
By Travis Tyler
Jorginho, Central midfield, 5.5
With Jorginho getting a yellow early and still making fouls, it looked certain Chelsea would end the match with 10 men. He settled out defensively and offensively he never really offered much. There were more than a few moments when Timo Werner would start a run in behind looking for a ball over the top or through. In almost every instance of this, Jorginho sprayed the ball wide to a fullback or to N’Golo Kante. Chelsea’s issues are primarily in midfield, and the Italian isn’t doing much to alleviate that.
N’Golo Kante, Central midfield, 5.0
Kante looked worn out throughout the match, a common theme the closer the squad list gets to the front. He was sloppy in possession and though his work ethic was still there off the ball, it was equally rough to watch. When the pivot relies on its most defensive player shielding their partner, it is easy for it to get overrun when that defensive player is on a bad day. But as already mentioned, midfield is the primary issue point for the Blues and one reason is the lack of alternatives.
Kai Havertz, Attacking midfielder, 5.0
This was Havertz’s worst game in a Chelsea shirt, not because he directly did anything awful but because he very much did nothing to help the team. More than any other player he looked to be running on empty and it bleed into his game. His passing was sloppy, he had little understanding of what he should do when Christian Pulisic cut in, and defensively he was a non factor. Games like this happen for every player, but he will need to be rested to minimize them.
