Chelsea player ratings: A fine draw masks tired legs
By Travis Tyler
Hakim Ziyech, for Mason Mount, 28 minutes, 6.5
Ziyech came on to allow Pulisic to go to his (not so) “natural left wing”. It did not change much. Ziyech himself was tidy on the ball but found the game difficult to influence just like his teammates throughout. It really wasn’t a cameo to write home about, but at the very least he kept things the same instead of making them worse.
Mateo Kovacic, for Jorginho 25 minutes, 6.5
Kovacic came on and saw the potential of Werner’s runs for a through ball, but by that point Sevilla had already well figured out the German’s ideas. Defensively, Kovacic avoided falling into the same traps as Jorginho or Kante but otherwise his introduction was more about seeing the game out 11 versus 11 than anything else. Like Ziyech, he really didn’t have much of an impact either way.
Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi, for Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic, added time, N/A
Abraham and Hudson-Odoi were ready to go for much longer than they actually got to play, but the ball A: has to go out and B: very few teams will ever make subs on a set piece. So Chelsea waited and waited and then the two got garbage time. With nearly every attacker dead on their legs, it might be worth the risk to start these two against Manchester United.
