Chelsea player ratings vs. Sheffield United: Big performances in win
By Hugo Amaya
Hakim Ziyech (Right winger): Almost illegal
Knowing what Hakim Ziyech can do is one thing, but seeing it in action is another. Ziyech was the creator of everything positive Chelsea did on the night. Despite not scoring a goal himself, he assisted two and created six. His left foot is as delicate as it is deadly as he was always looking forward for the right pass, while still keeping a sharp eye on what was behind him. The Moroccan’s skill throughout the match made him untouchable and his first time touches made him unbearable. Ziyech’s ability to put the correct ball in the correct place at the correct time makes you wonder if it is legal to field him. He’s superhuman.
Tammy Abraham (Striker): 9
While many ruled him out with Timo Werner’s arrival, Abraham has done nothing but impress every time he has stepped foot on a pitch thus far. Today was no exception. His link-up play with Timo Werner is fantastic as he holds up the play while other attacking players rush to try and score. Outside of the penalty area, Abraham is not too shy to come deep and retrieve possession for the team. His goal against Sheffield was somewhat unorthodox, but it was exactly what was needed at the moment. Sheffield was defending well as a unit and any solid opportunity from Chelsea hit a defensive player or the keeper. That’s why Abraham’s goal was just what the doctor recommended to inspire a comeback.
Timo Werner (Left winger): 9
While he should have score two goals on the day, Werner still walked away with one goal and another solid performance. Werner was crucial in Chelsea’s build up play. He knew when to run at defenders; when to cut inside to open other avenues; or when to calm the tempo of the game. What made his game outstanding on the day was the ability to anticipate plays, which is where his goal came from. Although Werner missed a break-away opportunity, he made up for it by being more alert than the defenders and making no mistakes in putting the ball in the back of the net. His contributions to the team don’t just come in goals, but in positioning and vision, as well.
Olivier Giroud (Striker): N/A
Olivier Giroud came on in the dying moments of the game for a quick seven minute cameo. He replaced Werner and joined Abraham up top after the game was already done and dusted.
