Chelsea score predictions: Battle with Tottenham for the top spot
How does The Pride of London staff think Chelsea will fare against its bitter north London rivals as the Blues battle Spurs for the top spot?
Chelsea hosts Tottenham in one of the most anticipated contests of the young Premier League season. Both London clubs have been wildly successful up to this point, but one will see its progression halted; the other will rise to the top of the table. It’s Frank Lampard versus Jose Mourinho part five: the battle for first place in the Premiership. Who will rise to the occasion?
Here is how The Pride of London staff sees the match playing out:
Varun Dani: 2-0 Chelsea
Lampard knows how to best Mourinho, beating him twice in the league last season. Spurs are a much improved unit since, but the same can be said about Chelsea. With five days rest since the Rennes game, there really shouldn’t be a case for European hangover for the Blues, so expect the strongest possible line-up. Edouard Mendy and co. to keep it solid at the back, Mason Mount and Hakim Ziyech to run the midfield and Timo Werner-Tammy Abraham to grab a goal each. The Blues will come out of this as the winners and strong title contenders.
Nathaniel Kay: 1-1 Draw
This is no longer a contest between the master and the apprentice; it’s become a match-up of two managers who are vying for the Premier League title. Mourinho loves the big games, as proven against Manchester City last week. None have come bigger than Frank’s free scoring, goal preventing, well rounded side. Spurs have also settled into the season strongly, so it’s only fair the points are shared. Harry Kane and Abraham the scorers.

Olaoluwa Nwobodo: 1-2 Tottenham
Chelsea is in top form, as is Tottenham. The Blues have a solid defense to show for the form. Mendy will probably have one of the most difficult games of his young Chelsea career. Mourinho knows how to nullify attacking threats and he would likely know what to do about Ziyech and Werner. He has an axe to grind against the Blues and Lampard.
Mike Malley: 2-2 Draw
With both teams in absolute top form, this match is sure to be one of the more exciting Premier League contests of the early season. Most of the headlines will be about Lampard vs. Mourinho, but it’s the players on the pitch who will obviously be more important on Sunday. Werner missed a few chances against Rennes, so he’ll be looking to get back into goal scoring form against Spurs. I predict he’ll score, but the Kane-Son combination is too good to be kept off the scoresheet at the moment.
Scott Brant: 4-2 Chelsea
Chelsea runs it up on Spurs because the Blues have been a scoring machine as of late. If Ziyech starts, the opportunities will be plenty. Werner might score multiple with a bit of a point to prove due to recent misses and sheer number of chances coming his way. It won’t be easy, but I would never pick Spurs to beat Chelsea.
Hugo Amaya: 2-1 Chelsea
A difficult game all around. With Mourinho determined to not lose a crucial game, and Lampard determined to make a statement, this will be a close match. Spurs will play typical Mourinho by defending, playing on the counter and letting Chelsea enjoy possession. However, the Blues’ new defensive and offensive capabilities will break through and take the three points.
Abhishek Pancholi: 3-2 Chelsea
Ah, poor Jose—so close, and yet, so far. Werner will put his Morata-lite display in the previous game behind him and put Spurs to the sword. A quick-fire double will put Chelsea two up in the first half, but Spurs will fight back to level the score. Late in the second half, super-sub Olivier Giroud will seal the victory just as Spurs thought this could be their day.
Kevin Peacock: 2-2 Draw
Generally speaking, Chelsea wins these big games and a game against Tottenham is as big as it gets. Throw in a former Special One and the importance ramps up further. Tottenham’s good form is a worry though and as good as Chelsea has been recently, a draw seems the likelier outcome.
Joel Kristian Frederick Burton: 2-1 Chelsea
This really is such a difficult game to predict. From a defensive perspective, Chelsea’s task is to nullify Kane and stop him from linking up wit Son Heung-min. The Blues have the personnel to do this, but of course it’s easier said than done.
Mourinho has been able turn his Spurs side into a team that can get behind the ball and nullify opposition attacks. However, I believe that Ziyech and Werner have the quality and patience to carve out one or two opportunities to win the game. One thing is for sure: this game will be another opportunity for Mendy to shine in a big game and cement his position long term between the posts at Chelsea.
Gabe Henderson: 2-1 Chelsea
Much like many other spectators attempting to predict this match, I have no idea how things will turn out. However, I believe the Blues will get the three points due to the extensive depth off the bench. Chelsea will leave it late, but Lampard’s side earns its biggest win of the year.
Michael DeVito: 2-1 Chelsea
Ziyech is the key to the win. Likely Werner, Abraham and Ziyech up front. Too bad Werner wasn’t rested midweek. He’s tired. Kane will score but Mendy will win the day. Mount, Kante and Havertz in midfield. James, Zouma, Silva and Chilwell.
Jake Brigstock: 3-2 Chelsea
I think we could be in for quite a game that will see-saw but end up with us coming out on top. Both teams have evolved and found their rhythm since the penalty shootout loss in the League Cup at White Hart Lane, and I can see an early goal setting the tone for a number of chances being created throughout the game. Each team will want to prove they belong in the open title fight, and this game determines who has the bragging rights in London. Chelsea to score early and Spurs to equalise before half-time; Spurs to come out strongly and lead early in the second half, but that will give us a kick up the backside m and we’ll get another two to win the game. Abraham to score if he starts, and Werner to have his shooting boots on and score a couple. Come on the Chels.
Travis Tyler: 1-1 Draw
It is the inverse law of Premier League match hype. The more a game is hyped up, the earlier in the season it is, and the later in the weekend it is, the more likely it is a terrible game that everyone regrets afterwards.
