Chelsea: Three things to look for as Blues look to bounce back at Wolves
Chelsea looks to bounce back from a pathetic loss to Everton, at Wolves. What are some of the things we should be looking for in the contest?
Chelsea may have dropped points at the weekend, but Frank Lampard’s side wasn’t alone. This past weekend marked the first time since 2008 that the Premier League ‘big six’ all failed to win a match. The Blues may have slipped in the table, but there is no reason to overreact to the loss. Amongst all the negatives associated with this season there is a hidden positive and that’s the fact Chelsea won’t have to wait long for a shot at redemption. The Blues cannot sit and dwell on its mistakes of the weekend due to their upcoming fixture against Wolves.
Lampard’s side defeated Wolves on the final day of last season, 2-0, to secure a top four spot. Both teams look much different this time around, as does their form. Wolves have only won one of their last five matches in the league whereas the Blues have only lost once in that same span. Both teams will be searching for a win with the home side looking for revenge after the last two contests between the clubs.
Here are three things to watch during Chelsea’s trip to the Molineux:
1. How do the Blues respond to a shocking defeat?
It’s safe to say both of Chelsea’s performances against Liverpool clubs this season have been shocking. The Blues’ early season loss to Liverpool was embarrassing, to say the least, with Kepa Arrizabalaga literally gifting the Reds their second goal and Andreas Christensen being sent off right before the halftime whistle. That loss sparked an unbeaten run that spanned almost three months—unless you count the loss on penalties (draw at FT) to Spurs in September’s Carabao Cup match—which came to a crushing end at the weekend.
Lampard’s side came out against Everton and put on a shameful and shambolic performance at Goodison Park, which is beginning to look like a cursed ground for the Blues. It was only their second loss since the league season’s start, but it was embarrassing nonetheless. Focus now shifts to the young side’s response. Chelsea was able to respond positively following the first loss of the season, but will it rebound successfully a second time?
Wolves represents a worthy opponent and it’ll be a true test as to how resilient this Chelsea team is. Although they’re currently struggling a bit, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side is one of the Premier League’s giant killers. The Blues need to put on a strong performance in order to forget the past, rebound with confidence and remain on par with the league leaders. Luckily, Lampard will know how to spark this response after doing the double over Santo during the managers’ two meetings.
