Chelsea player ratings at Wolves: Another lackluster performance
Chelsea put together another disappointing team performance at Wolves, but here’s how the players were rated as individuals.
For the first time in about a year, Chelsea has recorded back-to-back defeats in the Premier League. Frank Lampard and his men failed to bounce back from a narrow defeat to Everton 72 hours earlier, and have lost further ground on their fellow title hopefuls. With Liverpool and Spurs set to square off in a hugely anticipated top of the table clash, Chelsea could be as many as eight points off the top at the sound of the final whistle in Merseyside.
The character and resolve of the squad will be under more scrutiny from here on in and it will be interesting to see how they cope. The availability of Christian Pulisic was supposed to be a big boost to Chelsea’s chances of walking away with all three points, which it ultimately failed to do, but how did he and his teammates fare in a disappointing night at the Molineux?
Edouard Mendy (Goalkeeper): 5.5
Edouard Mendy was beaten on multiple occasions in a single game for the first time in his Chelsea career so far and may feel he might have done better on both occasions, especially with Daniel Podence’s equalizer. A deflection off Reece James en route certainly didn’t help his cause on the first goal, but the second hurt just as much.
Reece James (Right back): 7
Over the course of the two disappointing defeats that the Blues have suffered in the last three days, Reece James has arguably been Chelsea’s best player. The Chelsea academy graduate whipped in dangerous crosses as usual and had Timo Werner been tidier with his control, might have even gotten an assist. He trailed off in the second half though.
Kurt Zouma (Centerback): 6.5
Kurt Zouma was unlucky not to have given Chelsea the lead on the stroke of half-time. His magnificent leap—which can be likened to that of an NBA player—saw him tower above everyone else to direct Mason Mount’s corner towards goal but unluckily, he was denied a fifth goal of the season by the crossbar.
Thiago Silva (Centerback): 6
Thiago Silva was one of Chelsea’s better performers on the night, as he was on hand to mop up several dangerous situations before they developed into anything more fatal. His experience will come in handy as Chelsea looks to steady the ship and get its title pursuit back on track in the coming weeks.
Ben Chilwell (Left back): 6.5
Ben Chilwell supplied a lovely cross for Olivier Giroud’s opener, as well as creating the most chances for Chelsea on the night. He did struggle defensively on a few occasions though. Nonetheless, it was a very good performance for the left back, who continues to justify the amount splashed to acquire his services from the King Power Stadium.
