Chelsea player ratings vs. West Ham: Abraham, Silva save the Blues
Jorginho (Defensive midfielder): 6/10
Even with N’Golo Kante on the pitch, Frank Lampard went with Jorginho as a CDM—in a 4-2-3-1—which was surprising, to say the least. The main motive for him to get the nod over Mateo Kovacic for that role was his distribution. Jorginho is a really good passer of the ball, but Silva’s distribution isn’t half bad either, so it didn’t really make sense to start him. Anyway, Jorginho was tidy in possession, but had a giveaway in the 26′, which thankfully didn’t prove to be costly. Good passing today, he did what he had to do before being subbed off for Kovacic in the 66′.
N’Golo Kante (Defensive midfielder): 6.5/10
Kante had to start on the right of a defensive midfield duo. He went forward a couple of times, and looked OK. There was nothing fundamentally bad about his performance, except for one moment where West Ham was on the counter attack and Kante slipped while trying to defend Haller. Fortunately though, the ball was cleared and the Blues were out of trouble. He progressed into the attacking third a couple of times and had a great pass to Christian Pulisic in the first half, who tried it best to keep it under control, but the ball went out for a goal kick. Once Jorginho was subbed off, he was in his primary position as a lone defensive midfielder and had a couple of great tackles. He went forward and played a great pass to Timo Werner, who hit the crossbar with his shot; showing when alone, Kante can do it from both ends of the pitch.
Mason Mount (Attacking midfielder): 8/10
Let me tell you one thing: if you didn’t know this already, Mason Mount is a very hard worker. Even if he has a bad game, he will work as hard as he possibly can. On Monday, he was really good. Mount was very lively throughout the game. He earned the assist for the first goal, unleashing a beautiful corner kick into the box for an open Silva to head home. The English youngster also had a beautiful cross across the goal, but unfortunately no one was there at the receiving end. Mount was also involved in the third goal, crossing it from the left to Pulisic, who couldn’t score the goal, but Tammy Abraham scored on the rebound. Great game from the Englishman overall.
Mateo Kovacic (Central midfielder): 5/10
Kovacic came on for Jorginho in the 66′. He didn’t really have a lot to do and was brought on to make sure the game stayed the way it was—he did that successfully. The Croatian had a few good passes here and there, nothing too out of the ordinary. He had that one beautiful skill move towards the end of the game, as well. Nothing else of note, really.
