The third area which needs bolstering is forward. Absent Olivier Giroud, who is all of that, but seems to have to scratch his way into minutes in the Chelsea team, and the very tall but trim Tammy Abraham, Chelsea lacks size and physical presence at forward. A pie-in-the-sky wish would be the very costly, Son Heung-min.

Son is a sizeable player who would also be a terrific signing if the Blues could pry him away from Tottenham, which is highly doubtful, indeed. Another name that comes to mind that doesn’t fill any size requirement (and doesn’t have to) but who fills a whole host of other qualifications is the wunderkind from Dortmund and English national team player, Jadon Sancho.

Sancho’s name has been on the minds of Premier League fans for years as Manchester United and teams, coincidentally including Chelsea, have been linked with this young superstar. While he again doesn’t fit the size suggestion, his acquisition would nevertheless be a masterpiece of transfer business. Even if the Blues had to await his arrival until the 21/22 season to acquire his services, as they did with his then-teammate Christian Pulisic, he would be well worth the wait. It would be good to hear in the comments who you feel might fit the bill as a big, tough addition to the Blues’ frontline (at winger primarily) who might be attainable. These all assume, of course, they make the necessary sales to help finance the suggested purchase(s).

So those are some suggestions to add steel and talent to this Chelsea team which seems to lack the leadership and toughness to compete for championships. Obviously, not all of these acquisitions could be achieved in January. Yet, even one would be outstanding. To finance any such purchases, the number of outgoing players would be substantial. But, if these players have been relegated to substitute duty, what really is the issue? We’ll see what eventuates.

Next. Chelsea can't separate Frank Lampard the player and manager. dark

But one fact is certain, absent a change in mentality and adding steel to the squad, this Blues squad looks destined to finish out of the Champions League and maybe even any European qualification whatsoever in 2020/21.
