CIES has released their biannual valuation of the top 100 most valuable players. Seven Chelsea players make the list, but how correct or incorrect is it?

The Centre International d’Etude du Sport (CIES) releases valuations for players twice a year. The valuation is based on a multitude of factors including age, length of contract, reputation, performance, and more. Like the ever reliable transfermarkt, their valuations are not the gold standard that matches reality. Instead, they are merely a calculation used to give a very rough estimate of a player’s value.

Seven Blues have made the most recent top 100 list, ranging from barely making the list at the 94th spot to the top 10. Which Blues made it, how does that compare to their last transfer fee, and how accurate or inaccurate is their valuation?

7. Jorginho, 94/100, €55m, last transfer fee: €57m

Lowest on the list is probably the one most likely to leave Chelsea next. The Italian midfielder is rated pretty closely to his transfer fee a few seasons ago despite having two years left on his contract after this season and having a style that would likely age well. All that being said, it isn’t all that unusual for a 29 year old that has been in and out of the squad to lose some value.

Seemingly, if Chelsea was to sell, they’d be happy with simply breaking even. There are some technicalities with that through FFP accounting but roughly 55 million euros seems to be a price the Blues would accept. The issue they have run into is few teams are willing to pay that for a player that is largely a system player. Some Italian clubs remain interested and his agent never stops drumming up interest, but it remains to be seen if anything will come of it soon.
