6. Ben Chilwell, 87th, €58.1m, last transfer fee: €50.2m

There was a great deal of handwringing ahead of Ben Chilwell’s transfer about his price tag. Leicester City of course valued him quite highly and threw around large numbers to scare Chelsea off. Frank Lampard, however, insisted on this particular left back overall others. Eventually, the Blues acquired the left back for an extremely reasonable price just over 50 million euros. His performances since (and the performance of alternative target Alex Telles at Manchester United) have only justified Lampard’s commitment.

That being said, it is somewhat strange that his valuation is pretty close to his transfer fee. He remains an England international and, if anything, he has only improved since moving to Chelsea. He now has a much longer contract and seemingly there are only a few clubs in the world who could afford to buy him now. Defenders are, in general, undervalued in calculations and actual transfer fees but Chilwell’s valuation seems shocking low.

5. Christian Pulisic, 61st, €69.8m, last transfer fee: €64m

Speaking of shocking low values, Pulisic is also barely above his last transfer fee. While the Blues might have (read: probably did) paid Dortmund more than he was worth at the time, he has only justified the price tag since joining Chelsea. He was a game changer last year for the club and while he may not have fully filled Eden Hazard’s shoes, he made that hole feel much less cavernous than was expected.

The only thing that really makes sense about his low bump in valuation is his injury history. Few teams would be willing to spend so much on a player that misses so many matches, even if in the matches he is fit for he is frequently the best player on the pitch. It is the Gareth Bale and Arjen Robben issue. Both are great players when healthy, but no team would have spent big on them after their injuries started either. Pulisic is young enough to rebound from his issues yet but at the moment, it seems to be dropping his value from where it could be.
