Wingbacks

Tuchel has re-employed the tactic used by Antonio Conte in his first and title-winning season at Chelsea, using two wingbacks to add to the defensive alignment while providing additional attackers in transition. Conte employed Marcos Alonso, as Tuchel has, and also Victor Moses.

Should Tuchel continue to employ this formation, the best pair of wingbacks are not necessarily the ones he’s been using. The better talents are Ben Chilwell and Reece James. Chilwell should start over Alonso, if he can adapt to the new position. As an attack-minded left-back previously in his career, there is no reason he shouldn’t be able to fit in there. He’s a better player and should be in the team

On the right side, Callum Hudson-Odoi has been manning the right wingback spot for Tuchel and has acquitted himself quite well. Yet, Hudson-Odoi’s attacking ability should be concentrated up-front and primarily in the attack not in using up energy in the full-pitch activity. He’s one of Chelsea’s best attackers and he should be deployed there without question. More on him later.

James on the other hand is a perfect fit for a wingback. He has the defensive experience required and the ability to transition into the attack and delivers brilliant crosses into the box if only someone could latch onto them and send them into the net. Chilwell and James are the better players and should be brought into the team as its wingbacks.
