Chelsea took on Manchester City in its first return to Wembley Stadium since last season’s disappointing loss to Arsenal in the FA Cup final. Entering the game as underdogs against an in-form Man City side looking to become English football’s first ever quadruple-winning side, the Blues put in an inspiring display. They grinded out a 1-0 victory and bookmarked a return trip to Wembley for the final next month.

Here are three lessons learnt from Chelsea’s narrow victory over the Citizens:

1. Thomas Tuchel’s Blue Army

Perhaps the biggest compliment that can be paid to Thomas Tuchel following Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Manchester City is just how comfortable the Blues were throughout the entirety of the game. It is one thing to play Man City in a one-off match and come away with the narrowest of wins. It’s another to play the game in such a domineering fashion that what is arguably Europe’s best team at the moment could only come away with a 0.76 xG. When considering the fact that Tuchel had only taken over at the club four months prior, Saturday’s result is a clear testament of Tuchel’s management and coaching behind the scenes whilst vindicating the club’s decision to part ways with Frank Lampard.

This was a team that had looked lost and completely out of its depth against the exact same opponents in January, having been smacked 3-1 at home. This is how far the team has developed in the time since and as long as Chelsea keeps playing the way it does, Tuchel may just live up to his promise of “hunt[ing]” City down as he tries to close the gap between the two clubs.

In the meantime, the Blues have made it into their fourth FA Cup final in the past five years and Tuchel is just a 90-minute match away from lifting his first piece of silverware with his new club. In a season of constant up and downs, that is surely something that all Chelsea fans can cheer about.
