The football world was rocked to its core on Sunday morning as news suddenly broke regarding the formation of a supposed ‘Super League.’ Rumors are flying around as reporters scramble to uncover the fine print regarding the drastic changes to European football’s century-old structure. At this moment, a lot is unknown about the situation, but things are reportedly moving quickly. One thing we know for sure is that Chelsea is set to be involved with an official announcement imminent.

This league is set to host 20 teams every year beginning in 2022. The structure calls for 15 mainstays in the tournament comprised of some of the biggest clubs from England, Spain and Italy. The Premier League ‘big six’—Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham—have reportedly all signed off or agreed to the proposal. Joining them in support: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan. For those unwilling to do the math, that’s just 12 clubs, what about the other three?

The Super League is attempting to bring in the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain. None of the aforementioned are showing any interest in the league at this moment in time due to supporter backlash or UEFA ties. Once the 15-team field is locked into place, there would be five places up for grab on an annual basis. These at-large bids would be won based on domestic performances.

The Super League is not a replacement for the Premier League, rather the UCL.

The situation remains cloudy and the finite details unknown. However, it seems as if this Super League is more of a Champions League replacement than it is a large-scale domestic league equivalent. The 20 teams would be split into two divisions of 10 with the top four from each side progressing into the knockout stages. Games would be played mid-week.

UEFA is vehemently opposed to the idea. European football’s governing body has been in emergency meetings all weekend to discuss its options. In order to prevent the formation of the Super League, UEFA has asked FIFA to step in and squash the blueprints. It has also discussed banning Super League clubs from their respective domestic leagues, the Champions League and possibly even preventing players from participating in the World Cup.

The Super League’s formation has been rumored for years. However, one can speculate that the discussions have been fast-tracked in response to UEFA’s new Champions League model. The administrative body was set to announce the structural changes to the competition on Monday. UEFA issued an emergency press release on Sunday afternoon in unity with domestic leagues.

Suffice it to say, this financial fight is going to get incredibly messy.

A lot of supporters have already begun to display their opposition to the idea with a lot more pushback expected. Unfortunately, money talks. All involved clubs are in favor of the project because it offers a stable income—especially to those in the Premier League. Teams like Arsenal and Spurs, who are set to miss out on the Champions League this year, would no longer have to worry about securing top four. Financial stability is guaranteed to each permanent participant in the tournament. It would also mean extravagant new television and sponsorship deals.

This situation is ongoing and The Pride of London will continue to provide updates.

Next. Chelsea versus Brighton will be the last chance to rotate for a spell. dark
