Chelsea predicted XI: The best team the Blues can field (currently)
By Travis Tyler
Mason Mount (No. 19), Right forward, England
No one was truly good or bad against Brighton; everyone was just kind of present to go through the motions. As such, it is hard to grade Mount’s time in the pivot. That being said, it was pretty clear that, without Mount as a forward, Chelsea’s attack was at its flattest under Tuchel. Mount does so many of the little things on and off the ball that, even if he can play in the pivot, he needs to be a forward to get his teammates firing.
Kai Havertz (No. 29), Center forward, Germany
Is Havertz Chelsea’s long term answer for striker? Not at all but for now he seems to be A: one of those trusted to lead the line and B: the best of those trusted to lead the line. This is basically Tuchel making the best of a bad situation. Havertz is one of Chelsea’s most talented players and the attacking spots are limited in a 3-4-3. With diminishing trust for Timo Werner, little trust for Olivier Giroud, and no trust for Tammy Abraham, Havertz is the man by default.
Christian Pulisic (No. 10) Left forward, United States
With Pulisic on and off the treatment table and out of form when he did play, Werner reigned supreme. But now that Pulisic (knock on all the wood nearby) seems fit, he has found form, and this choice should be a no brainer. Tuchel is using Pulisic much as Frank Lampard did now in that he is almost a second forward coming in from the flank. That’s how Werner was used too but only one of the two has an eye for goal right now and that is why he’ll get the nod.
