Chelsea takes on Real Madrid in one of the most highly anticipated Champions League semifinals in recent history. This match-up is 20+ years in the making as these sides have not met in a competitive match since 1998. This tie will feature the return of legends, some family ties and a David vs. Goliath-esque contest. It’s the mature Real Madrid squad against the youthful Blues of west London. Thomas Tuchel and Zinedine Zidane are two of the game’s most elite managers, they’ll square off with a trip to Istanbul for the UCL final on the line.
Here is how The Pride of London team sees the match playing out:
Michael DeVito: 0-2 Chelsea
Tuchel has transformed Chelsea’s defense into a strong, impenetrable Blue Curtain. Drum tight. As we say across the pond, a lockdown defense. The reemergence of Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen is also a thing to behold. It demonstrates a key dynamic seemingly in any managerial change, that a football player’s ability is in the eye of the beholder. Fascinating. Real Madrid is a top side loaded with talent, but Chelsea’s defense will hold. Locking down Karim Benzema is the key. In the attack, don’t be surprised if Timo Werner hits pay-dirt again; or Christian Pulisic. They’re both getting very close to a major outburst of goals. Get the bad luck “goal-line ghost” off the line and the Blues will steamroll some team soon. Until then, 1-0 will do just fine.

Tan Yi Hao: 0-1 Chelsea
A repeat of the scoreline in the away leg against Atletico Madrid, Real is undoubtedly going to prove itself a far more potent side than its noisy neighbours. Comfortable operating with or without the majority of possession, Real Madrid’s victory over Liverpool should provide sufficient warning of the consequences of underestimating Los Blancos. Expect a cagey affair and the Blues to just edge their opponents out heading into the second leg.
Olaoluwa Nwobodo: 0-1 Chelsea
Chelsea has come a long way, and now Tuchel and his men are thinking about winning it. Real Madrid has conceded eight more goals in the UCL this season. The Blues will have to withstand some pressure, but once they do, they’ll be fine. Hakim Ziyech to score.
Olly Smith: 1-1 Draw
Madrid is not the team of the group stages, Zidane has got Los Blancos purring and they’re very dangerous. Tuchel has made Chelsea better defensively and that’s what this game will be about. Of course, fate has made it so that Eden Hazard is fit and as he did on so many occasions for us, he stands tall in the most important games. He’ll find the back of the net. Our Lord and Saviour Mason Mount will nick one back setting up a barnburner of a second leg.
Mike Malley: 0-0 Draw
The amount of petty drama in this match-up is insane. There are so many tasty off-the-field storylines that will be dominating the news cycle before kickoff, it is only natural that the actual performance will be disappointing. Chelsea’s biggest focus should be containing Benzema and Vinicius Jr, who have become one of the more dangerous attacking duos in all of Europe over the past few weeks. Hazard’s health will be something else that Blues’ supporters will all be paying attention to, but his return to Stamford Bridge for the second leg will be an even bigger occasion.
Anthony Gatt: 1-1 Draw
A lot of questions have to be answered by both teams going into this game due history of this fixture being very limited. I was tempted to predict this game as 0-0, but with attacking threat of Benzema and the return of Hazard, I believe goals will come. A 1-1 result will be perfect to take back to Stamford Bridge with Chelsea possessing the ability hold a lead in this competition.
Scott Brant: 0-0 Draw
People will expect this match to be exciting and entertaining. Some gambling outlets are offering bonus’ for more than two goals being scored, and that has sucker bet written all over it. This match will the exact opposite, it will be two teams afraid to make a mistake in the first match of the aggregate. Both sides will be hesitant and weary of one another, leaving fans with yearning for more. Everything will come down to that second match.
Barrett Rouen: 0-2 Chelsea
My real only worry is if Hazard has a worldy because he is so excited to be playing against us. If Tuchel is able to resist the urge to meddle around too much with the formation and whoever is in charge of keeping Benzema muffled actually does their job, I’d say we have Madrid on skates. That could all go south though and Madrid’s experience is a hugely dangerous thing to deal with. We need to get the lead going into the second match because Madrid will have more of its starters back and fully rested for that game so we need to make the most of the advantage. The important thing to keep in mind with Madrid is that it is exactly who it is, the best cup playing side in the world. Being smart about that and how we manage Los Blancos is going to be massively important.
Varun Dani: 0-1 Chelsea
After all the Perez trash talk, Chelsea players will be absolutely pumped to pummel Real Madrid. That’s exactly what Perez and Zidane want, but the pragmatist he is, Tuchel will sit them down, sap all the emotion out if their bodies and send out XI cyborgs to Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano. Classic 1-0 win written all over this.
Kevin Peacock: 1-1 Draw
This first game of two is bound to be edgy. Neither side will want lose the tie during the first 90 minutes. Tuchel has returned the Blues into a team that are very difficult to beat. They may not always be pleasing on the eye, but the German certainly read the job description before he rocked up at the interview. The hard-working Werner grabs the crucial away goal.
Abhishek Pancholi: 2-1 Real Madrid
This is going to be one of those games where Chelsea will be under the cosh for most of the 90 minutes, before grabbing a late away goal that could turn the tie on its head in the return leg.
Gabe Henderson: 1-1 Draw
Chelsea’s rock solid defense has had a few shaky moments lately, most notably the matches against West Brom, Crystal Palace and Brighton. Real Madrid doesn’t hesitate to punish sides on those errors and will do so before a late Pulisic goal sends the Blues home satisfied. Everything still to play for in the second leg after a tense draw.
Nate Hofmann: 1-1 Draw
Chelsea’s defense is excellent, but Real Madrid is what it is. Los Blancos have so many weapons, it’s tough to imagine keeping them all quiet for 90 minutes. The scariest thing is that Hazard looked excellent in his substitute appearance against Real Betis last weekend. He played barely 15 minutes, but was easily the best player on the pitch, and came closer to creating a goal than anyone else. Even if he’s only able to be a bit-part player on Tuesday, you’d expect him to have an impact. It’ll break Chelsea fans’ hearts, I’m sure, but I’d count on the Blues finding a retaliatory goal of their own to keep things nicely poised headed into the second leg.
