3. Thomas Tuchel has added something missing for years

Frank Lampard’s “inexperience” is pretty well overblown, but he there were some areas where he struggled without dispute. One of those areas was the consistency of mentality. Chelsea would have fire in their bellies one match and they’d wilt the next under the slightest heat from the opposition. That is, of course, not exclusive to Lampard. Chelsea has faced the same issue since 15/16, with 16/17 being the only respite.

However he’s done it, Tuchel’s found that mentality in this team. Maybe seeing club legend Lampard sacked after one bad month was what some needed to wake up. Maybe some felt like they had a point to prove after a new manager came in, both for Tuchel and against Lampard. Whatever the reasons are, Tuchel has stoked those sparks into the current flame.

Six months ago, Chelsea goes 1-0 down and loses that match even with the penalty save. Instead, Chelsea took a breather at halftime, and came out in the second to win. The Blues came out of their shells and Hakim Ziyech found the equalizer. Marcos Alonso found the winner.

This grit has been showcased a few times now under Tuchel and it’s only growing each time. With the biggest match of all in three weeks, Chelsea is showing the tools needed to get the job done. Tuchel has to be credited for that, however he’s gone about it.
