Chelsea player ratings from the absolute Arsenal debacle
Mason Mount 7/10, Right Forward
Mason Mount was Chelsea’s biggest threat going forward in the first half. His role in the initial 3-4-3 was familiar, and he looked great as he kept passing the ball into dangerous areas. There were a couple of moments on the byline when Mount ended up shooting the ball straight at Bernd Leno from a problematic angle rather than crossing it to a teammate. However, as the game progressed, Mount’s impact decreased a lot, and his deliveries from corners were quite inconsistent. Overall, it was a bit of an average match considering Mount’s performances this season.
Kai Havertz 5/10, Center Forward
Kai Havertz was great in the first half against Arsenal. His control on the ball was sublime, and he looked like a real threat going forward. He played a couple of neat one-twos in the box and could have converted those into shots, but he ended up taking too many touches. The critical moment that defined Havertz’s game was when he was through on goal in the opening moments and could have easily scored. Havertz intercepted a weak back pass towards Arsenal’s Pablo Mari and looked sure to score, but his shot went over the bar, and this passage of play defined the game. Both sides made a mistake. Arsenal capitalized, Chelsea didn’t.
Christian Pulisic 6/10, Left Forward
Cristian Pulisic needs to understand that these are the games where he can solidify his position in the starting lineups. It was pretty harsh to leave him on the bench in the second leg against Real Madrid. Since then, he has started two games in a row against Manchester City and Arsenal, respectively. If he wants to start that Champions League final, or even the FA Cup final for that matter, he needs to be the driving force in these games. Out of the three forwards that Tuchel started against Arsenal, Pulisic’s impact was the least as his highlights from the game were a couple of bright dribbles in his half. He attempted six crosses, and only one was accurate, and he also won only three out of nine ground duels. Pulisic needs to take advantage of the chances and dominate these games to stand out in Chelsea’s squad.
Callum Hudson-Odoi 5/10, Sub
Callum Hudson-Odoi did have the required impact in the second half after coming on for Billy Gilmour. This was the perfect game for him to make his case. He has been benched for a while now, and he could have been the gamechanger against Arsenal. Unfortunately, he was practically invisible, and he can forget about the upcoming games for now.
Olivier Giroud 6/10, Sub
You can’t blame Giroud for not doing much in this game. If you cannot play to your striker’s strengths, then there is no point in bringing him in at all. Chelsea needed to bombard the box with crosses as soon as Giroud came on. The Frenchman did manage to hit the post but could have easily scored on a different day.
Hakim Ziyech 6.5/10, Sub
Hakim Ziyech came on with twelve minutes left and couldn’t do much. He put in a dangerous cross for Chilwell that a flying Hector Bellerin stopped.
