Kai Havertz, midfielder, £8.5m

After a rather lackluster first season in English top-flight football, Kai Havertz has seen his value drop slightly as compared to the start of last season’s FPL. However, the German showed clear signs of the player he could yet become with increasingly impressive performances towards the end of last season. As such, at £8.5m, Havertz could represent the differentiating factor in a game where the majority of players would be gunning for the likes of Jack Grealish(£8.0m) and Phil Foden(£8.0m) to bring home the points amongst players of a similar price range.

Moreover, should Chelsea’s pursuit of a new number 9 fail to come to fruition and with the likes of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud angling for moves away, the 22-year-old should be seeing more action as a false-nine. It is a role that he has played to great effect on selected occasions under Tuchel and a position he is frequently deployed in when he is with the German National Team. As his recent showings in Euro 2020 would go to show, there is untapped potential that could yet be harvested by players willing to take a calculated risk on him for the 21/22 FPL season.

Players to avoid

Lastly, on the topic of players to avoid, there is no bigger example than Chelsea’s own Timo Werner. Coming in at £9.0m, Werner simply has not shown enough last season to justify his price tag. Bring in just 128 points despite starting almost every league game for the Blues, Werner is more expensive than the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin(£8.0m), Danny Ings(£8.0m) and Patrick Bamford(£8.0m) but brought in lesser points than all three of them. Even Roberto Firmino(£9.0m), Firmino of all people ladies and gentlemen, brought in more points than our self-deprecating German center-forward. As Chelsea fans, all of us naturally want the best of Werner to finally come into play next season and what better way to show our support than to include the German in our FPL lineups? But it is the competitive world of FPL, and if you mean business, there just is not any room for sentimentality. (Sorry Werner!)

Next. Last chance for Chelsea's loan army coming at a good time. dark
