Chelsea should focus on top-tier players this transfer window

It is that time of the year where every club—including Chelsea—is in the transfer market looking at players to improve their respective squads. Notable clubs like Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Aston Villa have all already made additions to their teams. Meanwhile, Blues fans are also looking at potential incomings at the club.

The vital purpose of the transfer window is to improve the existing squad to take the team to the next level. Clubs, in addition, utilize it to keep the squad fresh and make sure the members from the previous season are not complacent. However, there have been instances where clubs recruit players that do not improve the team much and end up as flops—especially at Chelsea.

After the recent Champions League success and turnaround of form in the league since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival, the Blues are at a stage where the board must make sure the new signings should only improve the squad. The club recruited a host of players ahead of the 2020/21 season who all turned out to be a positive influence one way or another. Each of them can improve based on their maiden season at the club, but Chelsea will also dip its toes into the market for more help.

Other clubs will undoubtedly bring in players, as well. Each prominent team—including the champions, Manchester City—has positions where it requires new players. Meanwhile, Chelsea has enough depth at almost every position. There is no need for squad players on this team unless it is a replacement for potential departures. The board must make sure mistakes like the 2017 window should never be replicated.

Even if Chelsea does not make any signings, it won’t be the end of the world. The Blues’ form since January against fierce opposition—like Manchester City, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid—has shown they have what it takes to defeat the best. Ironically, it is the mid and bottom table sides like Southampton, Aston Villa, Arsenal and West Brom who have been the issue for them as of late. This is why their pursuit of a top-level striker makes sense. Chelsea needs a genuine goal-scoring machine. Timo Werner was not able to replicate his Bundesliga form in England. The potential departure of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud means, even if Werner can discover his form, the Blues definitely need at least one more player in that department.

Currently, there are not many choices available in the transfer market. Those who could be approached won’t come cheap or are pre-occupied with the Euros. It won’t be the end of the world if Chelsea embarks on the season with the same three forwards it currently employs; after all, they did win the Champions League with the group. Tuchel is more than capable of improving them all given he now has a preseason and more time to work.

Most importantly though, the fans need to be patient. They need to realize that Chelsea has an elite squad at the moment and there is no point in signing players for the sake of it or rushing it. The man who scored the only goal in the Champions League final, Kai Havertz, was signed only just before the beginning of the season. Even Edouard Mendy—the man who was brilliant through the season between the sticks—was brought in only after few matches were played. It’s important to give the board time to work its magic, so sit back, relax and enjoy the Euros.
