Four players Chelsea should sell to fund future transfers
Chelsea has had a slow start to the transfer window and outgoings have dominated the opening few weeks in the transfer window. Fikayo Tomori was sold to AC Milan after the Rossoneri decided to make his loan move permanent for around £25 million and Victor Moses ended his nine-year spell at Chelsea and completed his move to Spartak Moscow for £4.5 million. Players like Marco van Ginkel, Danilo Pantic, Izzy Brown, Willy Caballero and Jamal Blackmen have also left the club for free after their contracts expired on June 30. Recently, Billy Gilmour completed his highly anticipated loan move to Norwich City to get some much deserved first team minutes in the Premier League. This playing time would have been difficult for him to get if he had stayed at Chelsea.
The Blues have been linked with players like Erling Haaland and Declan Rice, amongst others, but these deals would require large sums of money. Here are a few players who can be sold for a decent amount to raise those funds:
1. Tammy Abraham
After being promoted to Chelsea’s first team in Frank Lampard’s first season in charge, Tammy Abraham had an amazing start to his Chelsea career. He scored 10 goals in his first 13 Premier League matches, but from then onwards, he lost his touch and scored only five times in 22 contests. Scoring 15 goals in his debut domestic campaign is no small feat, but still being so young and inexperienced, he had his flaws. Chelsea did qualify for top four, not without the concern that his lack of goal contributions after his impressive start would continue. Abraham couldn’t replicate his goal scoring form in the 2020/21 season either, scoring only six goals in 16 league games.
After Lampard was relieved of his duties, Thomas Tuchel changed the formation from a back four to a back three. The German did start Abraham twice, but on both occasions, subbed him off at halftime. After he suffered an ankle injury that kept him out for a month, he certainly fell down the pecking order and played only 140 minutes of football in total. Even toward the end of the season when Timo Werner was not at his best, the German gaffer continued with his compatriot instead of Abraham. Personally, it feels that Tuchel stuck with Werner because of his off-the-ball work rate—which was better than Abraham’s—and even when Werner was not scoring goals, he was creating them well.
If Tuchel doesn’t fancy Abraham in his plans, he should be moved on as it would benefit both parties. Chelsea has reportedly set a price tag of £40 million for him, which might be out of the budget of teams being linked with him like Aston Villa and West Ham United. Any bid in the region of £35 million could certainly tempt the Blues to sell him this summer.
