4. Emerson

The Italian defender was brought in from AS Roma for £18 million as a back-up for Marcos Alonso under Conte. Under Sarri, Emerson was an integral part of Chelsea’s Europa League-winning side, but never got a string of matches in the Premier League. Throughout his whole Chelsea career, he was always seen as a back-up, first to Alonso and now to both Alonso and Ben Chilwell.

One thing he should be commended for is his professional attitude, despite the lack of playing time during his time in west London. He is very highly rated in Italy and regardless of his minimal minutes played for his club, he’s been a semi-regular starter for the Italian National Team over the last few months—including a recent run as the starter following Leonardo Spinazzola’s injury.

He is now being heavily linked with Napoli as their new head coach, Luciano Spalletti, who worked with him at AS Roma, rates him highly. Spalletti wants him to be a part of his team next season. Emerson’s Chelsea contract is set to expire in 2022 and now, it seems that he will definitely be sold this window. The Blues have asked £13 million for him, which might not be an issue, but his salary will be a problem for Napoli. This deal for Emerson will take some time as the Italian club needs to sell some players before buying the Chelsea defender. Right now though, it seems as if this deal go through.

A few other players—such as Davide Zappacosta, Michy Batshuayi, Danny Drinkwater, Abdul Baba Rahman, Matt Miazga, Jake Clarke Salter, Lewis Baker and Kepa Arrizabalaga—might not fetch high sums of money, but moving them will also be very crucial as they earn high wages with the Blues. Freeing up these funds will definitely help Chelsea as it now has to offer new contracts to players like Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante after impressive campaigns for both club and country.
