4. Birmingham City signs Juan Familia-Castillo on loan

Juan Familia-Castillo has completed his loan move to Championship side Birmingham City until June 2022. The Dutch youth international signed a new Chelsea contract, extending by an additional year, through 2023. Signed from Ajax U17 team in 2016/17, Castillo has represented the Blues at U18 and U23 levels regularly since his arrival.

Castillo’s first move away from England came in the 2019/20 season when he played in the Dutch second division for Ajax’s U21s. He split his last season on loan at two clubs: AZ Alkmaar and ADO Den Haag in the Netherlands. There, he featured rarely for AZ Alkmaar—who sat comfortably in the top division—and frequently for ADO Den Haag, who was in the thick of the first division’s relegation scrap.

The 21-year-old was not long ago rated as a very promising left back/left wingback and while his performances dropped off last season due to lack of game time, he’s still very young and shouldn’t be written off. His prior experience of playing as a left-sided midfielder at the U18 and U23 levels makes him a versatile player which most of the managers in the footballing world prefer. This loan spell can be very fundamental for Castillo’s future at Chelsea. If we look at the left back situation in the first team, only Ben Chilwell can be seen as a long-term player for the Blues. Emerson Palmieri will be sold this window and Marcos Alonso has entered his 30’s. So the requirement for a left full-back is imminent. If the Dutch youngster can impress on loan, there is a high chance that he can be promoted to the first team within the next few years. If not, he can be sold during next summer’s transfer window.
