Summer in the world of football is not called “silly season” for nothing. When the transfer window opens in June, all logic and sense is usually thrown out the window until August 31 when it slams shut. Supporters craft pipe dream scenarios in their heads and run with the idea that their favorite player will be joining their favorite team, even if there is no concrete evidence. Unfortunately, this happens way too often at Chelsea given the stature of the players being chased.

The talk of the town this summer has been Erling Haaland’s transfer saga, or rather the lack of one. It’s made all of the fans forget about the potential move they hyped up during the Blues’ Champions League run: the return of one Eden Hazard. Hazard is seemingly being pushed out the door after two disastrous years at Real Madrid where he struggled with injuries. While it’d be amazing to see him in the royal blue of Chelsea again, that is simply not realistic at this moment in time.

More from Chelsea FC Transfer Rumours

Chelsea will not sign Eden Hazard from Real Madrid this summer.

Real Madrid will likely ask for an arm and a leg in return for the former Chelsea No. 10 given his £130 million transfer just two seasons ago. Los Blancos are in financial hell right now, but they are not stupid enough to let a player of Hazard’s caliber walk for pennies on the dollar. This is despite the fanbase turning on the Belgian for laughing with his former teammates following the Blues’ win over Real Madrid in the UCL semifinals.

There has been a lot of talk surrounding certain players that Carlo Ancelotti will give a chance to during his second stint as Los Blancos’ manager. Names like Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Isco come to mind, but little has been said about Hazard. It’d likely be in the best interest of the Spanish giants to offload Hazard this summer given his astronomical wages and inability to stay on the pitch for an extended period of time. The 30-year-old doesn’t have much of a reason to stay anymore either. The fans have turned on him, he’s had a forgettable stint in Spain and his mentor, Zinedine Zidane, left the club. Hazard’s “do or die” attitude and desire to prove he is still world class is the only thing keeping him going right now.

Whereas Hazard doesn’t necessarily fit into Ancelotti’s squad, he has no place in Thomas Tuchel’s either. The club legend will always be welcomed back with open arms at Stamford Bridge, there is no doubting that. However, Marina Granovskaia—being the shrewd businesswoman she is—is never going to pay £50-60 million for the sake of nostalgia. Hazard has done nothing to justify such a large price tag over the last two seasons. As much as he’s adored in west London, a move doesn’t make sense right now unless it’s cheap or a loan.

The Blues need help up top and Hazard could provide that if he reaches full fitness again. The injuries have been the biggest concern for him because when he’s been healthy, he’s been close to his former self. The only saving grace is the fact he didn’t have these injuries at Chelsea. The puzzling thing is figuring out whether it’s the wear and tear of years in the Premier League catching up to him or Real Madrid’s poor medical staff. If there’s confidence he can come good again, a cheap move would make sense. That being said, he’d still sit behind the Blues’ current wingers in the pecking order.

It’s important to remember when discussing the Hazard situation now that we’re talking about an injury prone 30-year-old who hasn’t played consistently well for two seasons now. We aren’t evaluating the player who had 38 goal contributions during the 2018/19 season. In conclusion, this move doesn’t look as if it’s happening right now. Hazard’s legendary status always makes the return a possibility, but the situation is too complicated at this moment in time.
