5. Chelsea open contract talks with Dujon Sterling
Chelsea has opened talks to extend the contract of Dujon Sterling. The right back/right wingback has impressed the Blues with his comeback from injury and his performances under the German coach in the preseason. The 21-year-old is keen to stay with the Blues but Thomas Tuchel will have the final say. If he is not promoted to the first team this season, many clubs from the Championship are also interested in taking him on loan for the season. The youngster was highly regarded by the Italian coach Antonio Conte but a serious illness followed a hamstring injury which kept him out for 13 months.
Since returning from his long-term injury in January, the Chelsea academy graduate has impressed Thomas Tuchel, who has given a lot of positive feedbacks. Dujon Sterling has played in both the friendlies up till now and has even assisted Callum Hudson-Odoi’s goal in the last friendly. It remains to be seen how he plays in the upcoming friendlies against Bournemouth, Arsenal, and Spurs. It is almost certain that if he performs well in those friendlies, then he can very well contribute to the team next season as a right back/right wingback. With the club’s failed attempts to sign Achraf Hakimi and a solid backup needed for Reece James, the academy graduate is only a few games away from living his dream of representing Chelsea for the 2021-22 season.
Previously, Dujon Sterling has spent his time out on loan at League One side Coventry City in 2018-19 contributing five assists in 40 appearances. In 2019-20, Dujon Sterling rarely played for his loan side Wigan Athletic in the Championship, making only 10 appearances.
Another Chelsea youngster everyone should keep an eye out for is Ian Maatsen who will be spending this season on loan at Coventry City. The left-back impressed last season on his first loan away from Chelsea at Charlton athletic making 35 appearances and scoring one goal and making three assists.
