4. Midfielders

It’s important to remember that the Blues have too large of a squad for the upcoming season at the moment. There are also only two genuine, classic midfield roles in the side, while the others are hybrids much further forward. Coupled with the fact that the two players Chelsea has in those positions are N’Golo Kante and Jorginho—who are both being mentioned for the Ballon D’Or—the issue becomes more obvious for potential midfielders interested in joining the club.

Who would want to come to Chelsea to be a back-up, and yet would also be good enough to do so? Behind Kante and Jorginho is already a four-time Champions League winner in Mateo Kovacic, followed now by Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tiemoue Bakayoko. The Blues also have already loaned out Gallagher and the greatest Scottish midfield technician of all-time in Billy Gilmour. Theoretically, that means the club has at least seven players all fighting for those two pivot positions in Tuchel’s system. Central midfield at the moment could very possibly be the strongest and deepest area of Chelsea’s team, even though the Blues only have three official first team players (Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic).

Regardless,  players like Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni and Ryan Gravenberch all offer something that the team needs long-term. Each young prospect looks like they’ll be world beaters in the future and if Chelsea was to add any of them, it would likely be on yet another complicated deal because of how congested the team is at the moment.
