Prediction
All things considered, Chelsea is going into this match as a heavy favorite. The Blues have looked excellent during the preseason when their “first team” was on the pitch, dispatching both Arsenal and Tottenham in the process. The Champions League winners will look to control possession throughout and win the ball back quickly up the pitch when they lose possession. Tuchel has his machine finely tuned and firing on all cylinders in recent weeks, expect the very best out of even those who struggled last season.
For Villarreal, this is a question of whether or not the Spaniards can sustain relentless pressure from Chelsea. Emery’s side is incredibly disciplined and only needs one or two looks to flip a game on its head. Those chances will be hard to come by against a Blues squad that slowly constricts opponents as the match goes on. Luckily, the Yellows already line up in a narrow defensive shape, so they’re comfortable when being pressed. Tuchel’s men will look to force mistakes out of the European newcomers, all Emery’s team has to do is keep the ball out of the back of the net to give itself a realistic shot at winning.
In the end, I believe Chelsea’s class will shine through and see the English giants prevail. The two sides are miles apart in class throughout the preseason, which usually doesn’t matter, but Villarreal has looked atrocious. Pile on the injuries and COVID concerns and there’s just too much adversity for the Yellow Submarine to overcome. The UCL winners leave Belfast with another trophy.
Score prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Villarreal
