3. Return of the fans

Despite the fatigue, there is one thing that could surely bolster the Blues: the fans. Fans were at the Super Cup but this will be their first time back in Stamford Bridge for nearly a year. Plenty has happened since then. Frank Lampard was sacked. The Super League arose and was promptly killed by Chelsea fans. Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea lifted the Champions League.

There will be plenty to go through for the fans but, as Tuchel correctly notes, they will be needed to help Chelsea out this season. His team’s duty is to give the fans something to believe in. The fans’ duty is to push the team on. It’s a self sustaining cycle if done properly and Tuchel will get to experience it with the Blues for the first time at the Bridge.

Tuchel’s right about Chelsea needing to be hunters rather than hunted. He achieved a great deal without anyone in the stadium to breathe life into the team. Now, to reach the peak of the Premier League again, he needs the help of the fans. Players will need it too. Nothing boosts confidence more than the fans singing your name even when you aren’t having the best of days. A few players were stuck in their own heads last season and the fans can help pull them out.

On the surface, Crystal Palace is a pretty standard MD1. But in context, it’s one of Chelsea’s most important matches in years. It’s not winning the Champions League, but it’s the reintroduction of the club to its fans and vice versa. Romelu Lukaku may be the new signing, but the fans can show their value here as well.
