3. Terrific Trevoh

The biggest compliment one could give to Trevoh Chalobah following his performance against Crystal Palace was that he looked as if he had been a part of the Chelsea first team for years. Chalobah, a Premier League debutant no less, looked as if he belonged there, alongside Champions League winners Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, seasoned midfielders Jorginho and Matro Kovacic and academy gems Mason Mount and Reece James. That, perhaps, is the biggest endorsement of his talent.

Strictly from a numbers point of view, Chalobah’s display was even more impressive. The centerback scored a fantastic goal that roused the Stamford Bridge crowd to its feet. He also completed 93 percent of his passes, had 90 touches, recorded three clearances and one interception, among other things. Rightfully so, he was named Man of the Match based on the same.

All that, however, is in the past. While it is a joy to look back on Chalobah’s impressive display, it is equally fascinating to ponder what the future holds for him. Chelsea was looking to loan the youngster out earlier in the window, with Valencia said to be among the suitors. Since then, the 22-year-old has started two games—against Villarreal and Crystal Palace—playing maximum minutes in both and producing displays worthy of highlight reels.

Tuchel thinks highly of him, evidenced by his comments on Chalobah in recent interviews, and is beginning to trust him to fill out one of the three spots in defense. A start against Arsenal would be the ultimate seal of approval for the player from the manager and in the presence of the club hierarchy, which continues to court Sevilla’s Jules Kounde for the same position. Kounde might yet arrive at the club, but Chalobah made a case for him staying the entire season instead of leaving on loan with another solid performance—a case in which Tuchel heard loud and clear.
