Chelsea travels to north London to take on Arsenal in the first official London derby of the season on Sunday. The contest headlines the Premier League’s second weekend of games as each team looks to best a rival in the second week of the 2021/22 campaign. The Blues got off to a cracking start to the year with a win in the UEFA Super Cup and a trouncing of Crystal Palace last week. On the other hand, it’s been a start to forget for the Gunners as they haven’t won a game since the end of last season. Arsenal either lost or drew all of its preseason games and Mikel Arteta’s men were bested by newly promoted Brentford during the domestic opener.

Do not let the current standing of the Gunners fool you though. Arsenal has done a lot of business in the transfer window, perhaps as much as any team in the division. The Gunners weren’t at full strength against the Bees and while they won’t be in this contest either, they do get some players back. Arteta—despite mixed results against other clubs—has always seen his side show up against the Blues. The Gunners haven’t lost to their west London rivals since Tammy Abraham completed the comeback for Chelsea at the Emirates in December of 2019.

As everybody involved with this game will know, Abraham no longer plays for the Blues. He was reportedly interested in playing for Arsenal, but the Gunners simply did not have the means to acquire him at this moment in time. The 23-year-old recently completed his move to Roma, leaving the No. 9 shirt at Stamford Bridge vacant. It was not open for long though as the new club record signing, Romelu Lukaku, claimed it. Lukaku is expected to be in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI on Sunday and make his long-awaited second debut for Chelsea.

The addition of the Belgian undoubtedly makes the Blues one of the favorites to win the Premier League title. Arsenal’s lack of cohesion and missing stars will give the visitors a huge edge on paper, but there’s a reason the games are played on a pitch. Anything can happen when these two sides get together.
