Chelsea: Everything that needs doing before the window closes
By Travis Tyler
4. Let rivals get caught in the mud instead
There is an old adage that nothing good happens after midnight. The transfer market equivalent is nothing good happens on deadline day. There might be good players to be had, but that close to the window slamming shut creates desperation that makes teams do crazy things like signing Danny Drinkwater or overpaying for players just to get them in.
The only need Chelsea really had this transfer window was a striker. A bit of Erling Haaland distraction aside, Chelsea got their man in Lukaku quickly enough. Everything else is a bonus. Even with Kurt Zouma’s transfer to West Ham, a centerback isn’t an absolute need. Though the Blues could do with a fourth centermid before the current trio is run into the ground, there are others that can cover if need be.
Point being, Chelsea has no reason to be desperate in these closing days. If Sevilla doesn’t want to play ball over Kounde, so be it, the club will be back for him next summer. If the Niguez deal is truly off and no other center mid presents themselves, that’s fine, the Blues can wait on Gilmour or Gallagher to fill the role more permanently down the line.
Signing for the sake of signing has been an issue for Chelsea in the past but it doesn’t need to remain one. The Blues are already in a strong place for the season. Any additions at this point only strengthen that. Therefore, let all of the rivals fall over themselves on deadline day. Let City spend the GDP of a small island nation on a striker they really don’t need. Let Arsenal overpay for a player even Burnley would be weary of just to say they are doing something. Let the rivals eat each other alive on the craziest day of the year.
