3. Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)

Another player from the Bundesliga and another striker from the German top flight, as well. However, this time it is the one and only Robert Lewandowski, the greatest striker in the history of the competition. The aforementioned title was previously held by Gerd Muller, who scored 40 goals in the 1971/72 season. Lewandowski came close to breaking that record in 2019/20, but he failed to reach that mark in the end. The Pole finally managed to break the legendary record last season, cementing his legacy as the best striker of the Bundesliga of all-time. This in and of itself makes him a deserved winner. Now add to that the Bundesliga title, the FIFA Club World Cup and the DFL Super Cup, and you can clearly see why he is one of the strongest candidates to win the award.

The 33-year-old is the current holder of the Best FIFA Men’s Player award, he won it after his brilliant sextuple winning season. The 2020/21 campaign was incredible for him individually, but Bayern Munich managed to only pick up two domestic trophies. The German giants were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals, as well, putting an end to their defense of the trophy.. It was a devastating blow for the club, as well as for the player, as this really hurt his chances of winning the FIFA organized award ceremony and the Ballon d’Or.

The striker was instrumental in Bayern’s domestic success and he had a season that will go down in the history of German football. However, Poland did not have a good run in the Euros and the lack of European dominance means that he can be only awarded third place as of now. He has started the new season quite well, scoring six goals in four league appearances. Should he keep up this performance, he could go on to win the award. However, for now, there are two players who deserve it more than him.
