4. Jorginho doesn’t deserve it because he can’t match the forwards

One of the main reasons why Jorginho might not win the Ballon d’Or is because of his individual statistics. When it comes to calculating stats, forwards and defenders have it the easiest. Whilst being a forward is definitely rewarding with a lot of assists and goals, a defender can also be judged by his one on one skills and the number of clean sheets he has managed to keep. However, when it comes to defensive midfielders and central midfielders, assessing their performances via stats becomes quite the task. They do not get a lot of assists, nor do they get a lot of goals. They are also not at the forefront of the picture when it comes to defending.

Jorginho will go up against the likes of Messi, Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Ronaldo, etc. The one thing that these players have over the Italian is their number of goals and assists. All of these players have a lot of presence in front of the goal and that is one of the main things that the Ballon d’Or community checks. Although Jorginho does have a few goals under his belt due to the fact that he is still Chelsea’s main penalty taker, the goals scored by the strikers and forwards eclipses the goal scored by the defensive midfielder.

In the year when Liverpool won the Champions League and the Super Cup, Virgil Van Dijk was being named as the man to beat for the Ballon d’Or. He was the mountain in the defense who stopped all the threats. However, even after beating Barcelona in the Semi-finals of the Champions League, Van Dijk was not given the preference over Messi. The Argentine won it that time and he is the favorite to win it this time as well. When it comes to stats and goal-scoring, Jorginho will have to admit defeat.
