Chelsea vs Southampton player ratings: EFL Cup grades
Hakim Ziyech (Right winger): 6.5/10
It was again a disappointing outing from Moroccan international. Even though Hakim Ziyech did provide the assist for the opening goal—which was scored by Havertz just before the halftime whistle—he did not look sharp enough overall. He misplaced the easiest of passes and got dispossessed off the ball frequently. The winger was replaced by Mason Mount in the 66′.
Kai Havertz (Striker): 8/10
One of the joint-best players on the day was Havertz, who scored the goal to put the Blues ahead just before halftime. Havertz’s lack of physicality was pretty evident throughout, but even then, he was able to influence the game with five shots on goal, also creating four key passes. Havertz did lose the ball a lot of times in the opponent’s half, which was very frustrating, but we move.
Ross Barkley (Left winger): 7/10
Barkley started for the Blues for the first time in a very long time and played a very attacking role. The England international had a better first half compared to the second. In the first 45, Barkley was heavily involved in the final third, taking two shots on target and racking up a match-high five key passes. After a slow start to the second half, Barkley was substituted in the 66′ by Chilwell.
Mason Mount (Right winger): 6/10
Mount was brought on in the 66′ replacing Ziyech. The England international brought much-needed physicality and speed to the attacking third. Mount was involved in a lot of the play, creating two key passes, but the only penalty missed by Chelsea today was taken by Mount.
