Cesar Azpilicueta (No. 28) Right wingback, Spain

Reece James needs a break. The English wingback looked to be running on fumes against Aston Villa at the weekend, only finally settling into the game once he moved into a more defensive position that required less movement. Cesar Azpilicueta was given a rest for that game, so he’ll be fresh and ready for selection. The club captain is undeniably more effective as a member of the back three but he’ll be needed in a more advanced role against Brighton. While Pulisic acted as a suitable right wingback option against Steven Gerrard’s side, Tuchel needs to respect the attacking capabilities of Graham Potter’s men. Azpilicueta gives the Blues a more solid defensive presence.

Jorginho (No. 5) Central midfielder, Italy

Jorginho has been a polarizing figure amongst the Chelsea faithful since his arrival in 2018. While he was a good midfielder under both Maurizio Sarri and Frank Lampard, Tuchel has helped turn the  Brazilian-born Italian international into a world class player. His technical abilities and reading of the game are traits seemingly unmatched elsewhere on the pitch. The German gaffer has helped take the shackles off Jorginho and the dictator of play has repaid him by putting in excellent shifts nearly every time he steps on a pitch. Hopefully now people can finally appreciate the work put in by the Blues’ vice-captain on a daily basis as the team is not the same without him.

Mateo Kovacic (No. 8) Central midfielder, Croatia

Mateo Kovacic is still working his way back after about two months out with an injury and the Coronavirus. The midfielder has arguably been one of the best and most improved players this season when healthy though. He’s eventually going to be crucial in the way Chelsea plays with its record signing, Lukaku, as Kovacic’s penetrating runs are a gift to the talented No. 9. Kovacic simply needs to start against Brighton due to N’Golo Kante’s injury against Aston Villa. That being said, this start is not unwarranted though as the Croatian was brilliant in his cameo on Boxing Day.

Marcos Alonso (No. 3) Left wingback, Spain

Marcos Alonso is now Chelsea’s starting left wingback for the remainder of the campaign. Ben Chilwell is getting surgery this week and he’ll be out for the year with an ACL injury. While this is a huge blow to the Blues after Chilwell established himself as an integral part of the team, they’re in capable hands with the Spaniard. Marcos Alonso—much like James opposite him—has looked gassed recently though. Help is hopefully on the way though as the transfer market opens in two days’ time. Until then, Alonso is going to have to continue to start for Chelsea at left wingback.
