Chelsea has a big month of January on the horizon that features massive matches against Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham. Nevertheless, before it can focus on its big six foes, it must first put away Brighton at home. Graham Potter’s Seagulls come to the capital looking to catapult themselves into the top half of the table at the midway point of the season. They’ve enjoyed a lot of early season success, but have been impacted heavily by COVID-19 of late. This isn’t the same Brighton of old though, so the reigning Champions of Europe cannot overlook this crucial contest.

The Blues will have to piece together a makeshift squad of their own after they’ve faced their own battles with Coronavirus. Injuries have also not helped their cause either as key individuals like Romelu Lukaku, N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva have all missed time in recent weeks for one reason or another. Nevertheless, this is an important game as far as their title ambitions are concerned seeing as three points against Brighton would put them in the driver’s seat for second place in the English top flight.

Here is how The Pride of London team sees the contest playing out:

Olaoluwa Nwobodo: 2-0 Chelsea

Chelsea went from always winning against Brighton to never winning against Brighton. The Blues have to get back to winning ways against these opponents. There may be a chance to leap frog Liverpool, as well, so the players should smell blood.

Mike Malley: 1-0 Chelsea

The Seagulls are by far the most boring side in the Premier League this season, so it would only make sense for Chelsea to mimic their playing style in this match. The Blues looked dominant with Lukaku leading the line during the second half on Boxing Day, so expect to see the big Belgian in the starting XI this time. The superior talent of Thomas Tuchel’s men will win out in the end.

Olly Smith: 4-0 Chelsea

This scoreline sounds harsh, but Brighton is going to get a Blues side that is exhausted, strained … and angry. The players have been clocking the miles on the pitch and with Ben Chilwell needing surgery, their desperation will come out in the form of an all encompassing attacking display. Goals for Lukaku (x2), Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic.

Barrett Rouen: 2-0 Chelsea

This scoreline makes sense, so that’s what I choose. I’m mainly just gutted about Chilli B to be entirely honest. Other news won’t make me as sad.

Hugo Amaya: 2-0 Chelsea

Finally a comfortable win for Chelsea. Not much to worry about for the Blues, a consistent defensive display. Although the attack could still use some work, it’ll get the job done.

Leighton September: 4-0 Chelsea

The final match AND final home match of what has been a absolute roller coaster of a year for the team. A year that started under Frank Lampard and ends under German coach Thomas Tuchel with two European trophies in the bag! Chelsea will want to put on a high-class performance knowing a win would confirm its place in second in the league for at least a few days. A Lukaku double followed with a Jorginho pen and Mount goal. 4-0 to the Blues.

Kevin Peacock: 3-0 Chelsea

Leicester’s victory over Liverpool gives Chelsea a chance to claw back points lost in December. The possibility that Lukaku is back to his best after a fine second half performance at Aston Villa is a tantalising one. Whilst Tuchel has felt hard done by as the illnesses and injuries rise faster than the games come, he’s managed the situation pretty well. Brighton won’t be easy to overcome as it will look to frustrate Chelsea into submission. However, as we’ve seen recently, patience will overcome intransigence and goals from Lukaku, Mount and Reece James complete the rout.

Anthony Gatt: 2-0 Chelsea

Gabe Henderson: 2-0 Chelsea

It won’t be pretty, but it’ll be a massive three points nonetheless. The Seagulls are a tougher team than many are giving them credit for right now, luckily the Blues are also better than recent results suggest. An important victory to end what has been a fantastic year to be a blue!

Tan Yi Hao: 2-0 Chelsea

This should be a straightforward one for the Blues to close out what has been a brilliant 2021. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Lukaku to score.
