Three lessons learnt in Chelsea vs Spurs: Questions answered
By Hugo Amaya
3. Great attitude throughout
This was a great performance which showed a change in attitude from the players. Was it because of the change of formation, was it something Tuchel said or was it the occasion and circumstances that made it possible? One could argue it was all three. The Blues hardly put a food wrong against Spurs and considering the performances against Manchester City and Brighton, this was a massive improvement.
The work on and off the ball was great. In possession, Chelsea avoided recycling back to the defenders and instead, the players were committed to keep passes moving forward. At no point were the Blues out of options and this allowed for a progressive style of play. Off the ball, players were constantly looking for the open space rather than expecting the ball to fall to them. But, more importantly, all of the attackers were persistently tracking back. This was reassuring from the likes of Hudson-Odoi and Ziyech as neither are necessarily known for their defensive record. On the night, both were fantastic in cutting out Tottenham counterattacks. Sprinting back when needed or simply putting pressure on the Spurs attackers and making tackles, they excelled.
When it comes to the attack, everyone (yes, everyone) was brilliant on the night. One must remember that it was Conte’s Spurs on the field and creating chances will always be difficult. However, Tuchel got the tactics right by letting Ziyech play at the edge of the box and letting Hudson-Odoi run at players to desynchronize the Spurs defense. Then there was Lukaku, who played more dynamically. Although he was positioned in the middle of the box for the most part, he also came deep to allow the runs in behind and even went wide to drag defenders and open space up in behind the rare four-man Tottenham back line.
Overall, this was Chelsea’s best Premier League game in over a month. The change in tactics and formation were pleasant surprises, as well. The improved attitude of the players made it possible. Chelsea is back to winning ways as the team looks to challenge for silverware on many fronts.
